Books That Almost Didn't Make It!!

Top Ten Tuesdays is a meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish that features a new topic each week where we have to put down our top ten of it.

Today's Topic:

Books We Almost Put Down But Glad We Didn't

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

It took me forever to actually pick up this book. It seemed that everyone had read this book and the other books in the series, leaving me feeling "left out" when everyone was discussing the release of the series' 3rd book, Cress.
When I finally did read the book, I started to question if I was really into the whole, Cyborg, intergalactic, sci-fi, fairy tale feel of it.
I was and THANK STARS! because it has easily become one my favorite books/series out there.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

I seen the movie and thought it was okay. Then a friend recommended that I read the book, not only was it better than the movie (of course) but it was also one of her favorite books.

It took me some time to get into it and the whole time traveling mumbo jumbo was tiring, confusing, repetitive and kind of predictable. But I decided to stick with it and was not disappointed. It ended up being really good, AND IT MADE ME CRY...hahaha!!

Abarat by Clive Barker

I remember buying this book during my "non-reading" period, bored browsing through the book store, needing something to bring with me on a road trip. I read the first chapter then forgot all about the book.  I remember finding it when cleaning out my car, months later and threw it away b/c it had some kind of "spillage" on it.
When I started reading again this was one of the first books I thought about, found it at a used book store for $2 bucks and it has become one of my Top 5 favorite books ever.

Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning

This book was recommended to me by a number of ladies on Goodreads.I started to read it then set it down, thinking "not for me". Then one day I had a doctor's appt. and quickly grabbed this book to bring with me and surprisingly got hooked. I found myself reading half the book in the driveway of my house. My husband came outside, asking if I was ever gonna come in to make dinner. I was thinking more like "I can come in and do a lot more than make dinner..." ;) hubba hubba LOL!!!!
( us ladies on Goodreads are doing a summer read/re-read of the Fever Series and I CAN'T WAIT!!! So Excited!! Wooooo Hoooo! ♥)

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

I was REALLY excited about reading this book. I just knew I was going to love it. Ehhh....it was just, okay! I was so disappointed that I but it down and read something else. But b/c so many people told me I should give it another chance, I did and I'm actually happy I did so. I ended up liking the book. I really finished it so I could read the 2nd book in the series, Crown of Midnight, which I heard is, a whole lot better, than the first.
Finger Crossed!!

Now, I don't exactly have 10 books that I almost put down but glad I didn't, so I thought I'd do:

Books I Picked Up and Just COULD NOT finish or get into:

No One Else Can Have You by Kathleen Hale

I actually read this whole book. Uggghhhh and it was awful! I was able to stick through the whole thing, 1 because it was an easy read and 2 I really wanted to know who the killer was (even though I predicted it within the first few chapters)
I ended up giving this book a 1 star rating and I do not recommend it to anyone!!!

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia

The movie was coming out in theaters for this series and so I wanted to read the first book before it did. Yea, well I ended up reading the first paragraph over and over again. For some reason I could not get passed the first couple of pages.
Later on, I heard that the movie was that good either.
**My husband bought me the entire series for Valentine's Day and I didn't even read past the first page of the first book. Lol! I felt so bad. I ended up trading it in for other books that I know I read and Love! "sorry babe"**

The Archived by Victoria Schwab

This is a book that I am so disappointed in myself for not liking. I love the concept of the book, I love the beautiful cover of the book, I mean, What's not to love right! Sadly I was just really REALLY bored with it. I found it to be super repetitive and really slow. I do think I will try to read this again. I have to give it another chance, I mean, I bought the sequel, The Unbound,  for goodness sake!

DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!

Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Okay, lets get this straight! This book is not on this list b/c I didn't like the ending like all the other haters of this book. I did not mind the ending. I question it and the reason why, but this book is up here b/c of how it was constructed. I hated how the whole series was done with Tris's POV and then all of a sudden, add Four's POV, making the book one big mess. Jumbled, repetitive, boring.... I was not pleased with this final book..
(I watched the Divergent movie and LOVED it! Shailene Woodley was an amazing Tris)

I was interested in this book when a friend said I just HAD to read it. That I should read it with my hubby before bedtime. YEAH RIGHT! This book was so dirty! NASTY! Not subtle or nicely done. My hubby and I definitely aren't prudes but this book had us laughing, disgusted, and sympathetic towards the characters in the book.
It was fun, as a joke read, but definitely not something I find interesting or have the stomach for.

I hardly ever find a book that I don't finish or that isn't a 4/5 star book.
I'm constantly reading reviews and taking recommendations. They only time I get bummed over a book, is when I read a new release and it sucks. Rarely ever will a recommended book suck for me.

What about y'all? What's some books you couldn't finish or you thought was gonna suck but ended up being worthy of your time!

    1. Ha haa really! I haven't even tried to watch the film. I told myself that since I couldn't get into the book, that maybe I'd try the movie, like it, then want to read the book. NOPE!
Beautiful Creatures is not happenin' over here! lol
      THANKs for stopping by :)

  2. It took me forever to pick up Cinder too because cyborgs and robots are not my thing, but I really liked it and loved Scarlet. Cress is waiting patiently for me on my shelf now.

  4. I love the Silver Linings Playbook gif because I have felt like doing just that with a number of books (Including the one he did it to in the movie)!

  6. Cinder is the only one on your list that I've read, but I really did love it. I did put down Cress mid-read, though - mostly because I had other stuff I HAD to read as well as a big project to get done for work. But I'm itching to get back to it!

I like the idea of listing books you actually didn't finish. I've heard very mixed things about Beautiful Creatures, which has kept me from starting it.

Thanks for stopping by my TTT list today, and for sharing your story. I don't know if Blogger will let you know that I replied, but I did, and I was really touched. Thank you.

  7. Seeing a lot of Beautiful Creatures today. I struggled to get through that one too and when it was over I definitely wanted to throw it out the window! And Allegiant was very frustrating, it felt like such of a divergence (pun intended) from the series. Great list!

  8. Interesting choices! Cinder and the Divergent series are on my TBR list, and like you, it is taking me ages to get round to reading Cinder! I haven't read Beautiful Creatures but I've seen the film and found it pretty laughable. I like this list!

    Check out my TTT!

  10. "This book is not on this list b/c I didn't like the ending like all the other haters of this book." Preach on, Michelle LOL! I somewhat understand these feels (a lot of the middle section was pretty muddled for me--but I too, was fine with the ending).

    Cheers,

  12. Awe, Cinder. I'm happy you pushed through it because !!!! :)
I think I should do a re-read of The Time Traveler's Wife soon. I loved it when I read it years ago.
Allegiant. :( I'm one of the few that loved everything about it. Sure my heart still hurts. But I loved it.
I still haven't read The Archived. Well technically I started and got like 8 pages in and wasn't feeling it. But I will come back to it. It is so loved. Beside you. Lol!
    Happy reading!

  13. So glad you gave Cinder a chance and loved it, cause so do I!!!
The Time Traveler's Wife, though... I admit I enjoyed the movie more, on this one. Obviously the book had a lot more than the movie, but I also found the book a bit tedious, and I just wasn't the biggest fan of how it was all told, you know?
Still stuck on Dark Fever! Maybe I'll give it another chance after this?
And it's okay you didn't like Beautiful Creatures. I had a similar problem, but with the movie coming up I sucked it up and read the whole thing. It was nice (not amazing or anything), but I still haven't read the second one...
Well, those are all the book I've read/tried to read from your list! xDDD

    Great post!!!
