Review: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Throne of Glass
by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

It pains me to say this, because I really wanted to like this book, but I'm a bit disappointed with it!!

I thought I was gonna get a notorious,
"I will F YOU UP", BAD ASS Assassin?!?!?!...

...Instead I got a pouty face, frou frou dress wearing, love-sick girl, who sleeps til 2 in the afternoon and throws fits because she can't attend parties!!

I wanted to say:

SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP and GET YOUR HEAD OUT YOUR ASS!!

Just because your staying in a lavished room in the royal castle, doesn't mean you've become a Princess. Your a criminal assassin, there to compete in a deathly competition to become the King's pet. Oh yea, BTW, YOUR STILL HIS PRISONER TOO! Back to the salt mines you go if you fail, or worst put to DEATH!

The main character, Celaena, seems very innocent and extremely naive despite having "suffered" in the Salt Mines of Endovier. I would imagine her to be way more broken and hurt, bitter and bitchier even.
Then there are the two men that love her, the Crown Prince, Dorian and the Captain of the Guard, Chaol. I found Dorian to be a little pompous, womanizing, arrogant ass and Chaol to be quite charming, boring, but charming none the less.
Another character that becomes important in Celaena's life is Nehemia. A princess from another land that comes to the castle, pretty much spying on her home's rival kingdom. I really enjoyed Nehemia's character, although she lacks any depth, I think, hope, the author makes up for that in the sequel, Crown of Midnight.

This book has all the elements that I love to read about: assassins, romance, royalty, danger. However, despite it's promising story-line, It did not perform as well in it's execution!

I was hoping for more intensity.
This just felt so...
rated G!!

I guess if I want to dig deep and find out more about the main character, to appreciate the story more, then I should read the novellas. Learn more about her history and the story's background.

Even though I was let down with the intensity and the characters, I love the idea of the story enough to want to read the sequel Crown of Midnight. Plus I've been told that Crown of Midnight is much better than The Throne of Glass. But we all know how that can go...

HIT OR MISS!

  2. YES! To continuing I mean, I happened to love ToG haha. But if you are looking for epic blood sheddage, you'll definitely get it in CoM, and if I recall her novellas actually have a lot of good stuff in them too (in that vein anyway)

    1. I really really wanted to like this one, I mean it has all the elements that I love in a book. I was so sold that I went out and bought Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight before even reading anything on them, I read the blurb and loved the book's cover and I was sold. That's why I'm so freakin upset that I didn't LOVE it. I means it's a good story, I had fun reading it, it's just the characters lacked any kind of depth. Plus I just wanted it to be more Bad Ass. We'll see about Crown of Midnight. I've been told to expect blood shreddage, that makes me happy!
Anyway, thanks for stoppin by Love! ♥

    Have a great day!

  5. I felt the same way after i read it then.... i couldn't stop thinking about it then....read the sequel and slapped my self for ever shunning this tale. I hope you do the same without the slapping of course. The sequel makes up for it in 10 fold with major character development in almost everyone. I hope you keep on keeping on xoxo

  6. YESSSS!!! I am so glad you feel the same way Michelle! I liked this one, but I just didn't love it. Is it a fun, entertaining series? Absolutely, no doubt about that. Is it worth all the hype it's getting? In my opinion, not quite...

But I completely agree with this review 100% - especially the "I was hoping for more intensity.
    This just felt so...rated G!!
    " Yes, absolutely!

Thanks so much for sharing Michelle, and, as always, FABULOUS review! <3

    1. Hi Hi cutie pie! Thanks for stopping by and completely agreeing with me. I was hoping that I wasn't going to be slammed for not "5 Staring" this book. But hey, I'm just being honest and luckily everyone's being nice or agreeing with me. Luckily I'm hearing better things about Crown of Midnight, so i'm actually very excited to start that one. Have you read it? Are you going to read it?
BIG HUGS and kisses to your face! xoxo

  7. I think I enjoyed this a little more than you, but I agree that Celaena could definitely be kind of frustrating. I actually loved Chaol, but I didn't like Dorian at all. I've heard that Crown of Midnight is better and that you get to see more of Celaena's assassin side, too. Thanks for the great, honest review! :)
