Review: Half Bad by Sally Green

Half Bad
Sally Green

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

In modern-day England, witches live alongside humans: White witches, who are good; Black witches, who are evil; and sixteen-year-old Nathan, who is both. Nathan’s father is the world’s most powerful and cruel Black witch, and his mother is dead. He is hunted from all sides. Trapped in a cage, beaten and handcuffed, Nathan must escape before his seventeenth birthday, at which point he will receive three gifts from his father and come into his own as a witch—or else he will die. But how can Nathan find his father when his every action is tracked, when there is no one safe to trust—not even family, not even the girl he loves?

Okay...I was a bit disappointed with this one, only because it was one of my anticipated debuts/releases of 2014. I'm glad I borrowed this one from the library instead of buying it off of pure excitement of it's release. I didn't love. I didn't hate it. It wasn't half bad, No pun intended :) hee hee hee

The concept alone was intriguing and unique enough to keep me going and also I fell in love with the main character, Nathan, rather rapidly that I just had to keep following him on his journey. I really felt for this character and all the obstacles he endures.

A witch born with both white and black witch in him, Nathan was shunned away from everyone except for his family. On a journey to find himself and his father, Nathan is bullied, viciously beaten, held captive in a cage...I mean I give the author credit for keeping it real and brutal because that's just what it is. Heart-less and cruel!! I felt myself weeping inside for Nathan and the wickedness he suffered.

There is a little bit a light for Nathan when he meets Annalise. But that is soon short lived because she is a Pure blooded white witch, forbidden to have anything to do with a black witch. I understand the author having written a love interest for Nathan. Giving him some hope but I found the whole romance lacking and kinda irrelevant. I did't find a real connection between the characters.

I felt like this whole book was just a build up for the second book. I'm sure it'll turn out better this one. Do I even want to read the next book?!?! I don't know yet....we'll just have to wait and see.

  2. It's not half bad hahaha I love the pun ♥ But seriously, I've actually heard a few people say that this book was only ok for them. I hate it when a book spends all it's time hyping for the next one, it's so frustrating. Thanks for sharing this review Michelle, it totally helped me decide if Half Bad is something I would read.
Enjoy your evening... maybe watching, Vikings =D

P.S I had to fix my typo (it was bugging me) that's why there's a deleted comment.

anywho..... Yea, this book let me down. It was actually kind of boring. Just conversation's between people did not have to drag on that damn long. *shaking my head*

  4. To bad it didn't live up to your expectations. :(
I did end up really enjoying it. I loved that is quite a bit darker than expected. I think the second book has a lot of potential. Hopefully you'll end up picking it up. :)
    Happy reading!

  5. I agree about the romance, it did really feel lacking and just, eh, not as developed for me to really care about it.

  6. Completely agree with you on this one. Gah! Its so annoying because literally everyone loved this book and I feel like I'm missing something here. But reading this book for the second time, I have realised its not my fault - it's the books fault! I didn't enjoy the way the book was written, one minute in the main chracter's POV and then the next in a birds-eye view point (what the heck what that about?) plus I didn't enjoy the romance, the main character was ever so boring and the plot was too simple. I literally gave this book a 6.5 I think and now thinking about it, I think I was wa-hay too nice!

  7. Uh oh! This book was one that I was really excited about, but now I'm not so sure! If this is the case then I don't understand the hype surrounding it at all! Not sure I want to read it now, but then at the same time I'm intrigued to form my own opinion! I'm really glad I haven't bought a paperback yet though, thanks for the review! :) xx
