Book Beginnings and The Friday 56 #4

Hey Guys! Join me every Friday for some bookish fun! I'll be sharing Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Readersand for double the fun, The Friday 56, hosted by Freda's Voice

Let's get started!!

Book Beginnings:

share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Don't forget to include the title of the book and the author's name.

"The first thing you should know about me is that I am my father's son. And when they came for him, I did as he asked. I did not cry. Not when the Society televised the arrest. Not when the Gold's tried him. Not when the Gray's hung him. My mother hit me for that. My brother Kieran was suppose to be the stoic one. He was the elder, I the younger. I was suppose to cry."

By: Pierce Brown

My Thoughts:
Immediately I was choked up when I read this beginning of this book and probably up until the 4th chapter. Just from the beginning it show how intense the book was going to be. I'm currently still reading it and it has yet to disappoint :)

The Friday 56:

Grab a book, any book, and turn to page 56 or 56% on ebooks. Share a sentence (or more) that left an impression or that stood out.

(Page 56): "When he was a little kid, he'd had a firm belief in universally observed monster rules. He'd been sure, for example, that if he kept all parts of himself on the mattress and shrouded beneath blankets, if he kept his eyes closed, and if he pretended to be asleep, then he'd be safe."

By: Holly Black

My Thoughts:
I chose to share these sentences because they hit so close to home. I felt the same exact way when I was little, having nightmares of snakes and witches. Thinking if I stayed completely still, with my entire body in the middle of my bed, cover enveloping me, then I would be safe from any harm.

What's your book beginnings and Friday 56?
Share with me here!
I'd love to hear y'alls thoughts!
Til Then,
Happy Reading Y'all!!
xoxo

P.S. Happy Friday! Y'all have a wonderful, safe weekend :)

Thursday's Quotable Quote: Red Rising

Quotable Thursdays is a bookish meme hosted by Mo_Books, where you share a great quote or two from any book and explain why you chose it. (Make sure when choosing your quote, it's one that does share anything that will spoil the story for others)

My Quotable Quote for Thursday, January 30th, comes from:

"Death isn't empty like you say it is. Emptiness is life without freedom, Darrow. Emptiness is living chained by fear, fear of loss, of death. I say we break those chains. Break the chains of fear and you break the chains that bind us to the Golds, to the Society."

By Pierce Brown

I went with a book that I'm currently reading right now. The quote shows just how raw and intense it is. In your face with attitude and grief. It's everything I thought it would be when I was anticipating it's debut!
Haven't even finished it yet and I'm already recommending it to
EVERYBODY!!!  YES! It is that AWESOME!!

What's y'alls Quotable Quotes???
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Til then,
HAPPY READING Y'ALL!!
xoxo

Things that make you say Ummmmm.....♥

- From the book you’re currently reading, or one you just finished, tell us what made you SWOON. What got your heart pounding, your skin tingling, and your stomach fluttering

- Try to make the swoon excerpt 140 characters (or less), if you are going to tweet about it. Use the hashtag #YABOUND when tweeting.

Hosted by YA Bound

For my very first Swoon with YABound, I figured I'd start off rather, PG! Something more romantical :)
By Susan Ee

"It is not a gentle kiss of a couple on a first date, nor is it the kiss of a man driven by simple lust. He kisses me with the desperation of a dying man who believes the magic of eternal life is in this kiss. The ferocity of his grip around my waist and shoulders, the grinding pressure of his lips, has me off balance so that my thoughts whirl out of control.
The pressure ease, and the kiss turn sensual.
A tingling warmth shoots from the silken touch of his lips and tongue straight to my core. My body melts into his and I'm hyperaware of the hard muscles of his chest against my breasts, the warm grip of his hands around my waist and shoulders, the wet sliding of his mouth on mine.
Then it's over."

I mean, your knees get weak right? For a something PG like that. It's swoonable :)

I'd Love to hear some things that make y'all swoon
(from books, books only please, LOL)

Til then
HAPPY READING Y'ALL!!

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING:

Red Rising
By: Pierce Brown

"Darrow is a Helldiver, one of a thousand men and women who live in the vast caves beneath the surface of Mars. Generations of Helldivers have spent their lives toiling to mine the precious elements that will allow the planet to be terraformed. Just knowing that one day people will be able to walk the surface of the planet is enough to justify their sacrifice. The Earth is dying, and Darrow and his people are the only hope humanity has left.

Until the day Darrow learns that it is all a lie. Mars is habitable

The war begins..."

The debut of this book was one of my most anticipated of 2014! The wait is now over and I'm finally reading it :) YAY!! As soon as it came out on midnight, January 28th, I was reading it on my Kindle. (waiting for my hardback to come in the mail, lol)
So far this book has not disappointed me! It pretty much sucked me in from page one, absorbed and captivated me!
I've already been a blubbering mess!!!

WHAT BOOK DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH?

No One Else Can Have You
By: Kathleen Hale

"Small towns are nothing if not friendly. Friendship, Wisconsin (population: 689 688) is no different. Around here, everyone wears a smile. And no one ever locks their doors. Until, that is, high school sweetheart Ruth Fried is found murdered. Strung up like a scarecrow in the middle of a cornfield.
Unfortunately, Friendship’s police are more adept at looking for lost pets than catching killers. So Ruth’s best friend, Kippy Bushman, armed with only her tenacious Midwestern spirit and Ruth’s secret diary (which Ruth’s mother had asked her to read in order to redact any, you know, sex parts), sets out to find the murderer. But in a quiet town like Friendship—where no one is a suspect—anyone could be the killer"

It took a lot for me to finish this book. I felt really old reading it for some reason :(
The thing that sucked was that I pretty much knew who the killer was a couple chapters in.
Just wasn't my cup of tea ....
1.5 stars

WHAT WILL YOU READ NEXT?

Doll Bones
By: Holly Black

"Zach, Poppy and Alice have been friends for ever. They love playing with their action figure toys, imagining a magical world of adventure and heroism. But disaster strikes when, without warning, Zach’s father throws out all his toys, declaring he’s too old for them. Zach is furious, confused and embarrassed, deciding that the only way to cope is to stop playing . . . and stop being friends with Poppy and Alice. But one night the girls pay Zach a visit, and tell him about a series of mysterious occurrences. Poppy swears that she is now being haunted by a china doll – who claims that it is made from the ground-up bones of a murdered girl. They must return the doll to where the girl lived, and bury it. Otherwise the three children will be cursed for eternity . . ."

Actually I started reading this already but when Red Rising's debut made it's appearance on my Kindle yesterday, Doll Bones kindly took a backseat until I finished with it. BUT!!!! Whenever Red Rising gets to intense, I'll find myself scooping up this book and reading. Even though it's a bit chilling. Can't wait to fully dig my claws into this one. So far it's really fun :)

What are y'alls Wednesday what's?? I'd like to know :)
Til then
HAPPY READING Y'ALL!!!
XOXO

What's my W.O.W (Waiting on Wednesday): Half Bad

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly bookish meme,
hosted by Breaking the Spine,
that showcase upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

Today I'll be spotlighting:

   Half Bad
Publication: March 4, 2014

Summary from Goodreads:

In modern-day England, witches live alongside humans: White witches, who are good; Black witches, who are evil; and fifteen-year-old Nathan, who is both. Nathan’s father is the world’s most powerful and cruel Black witch, and his mother is dead. He is hunted from all sides. Trapped in a cage, beaten and handcuffed, Nathan must escape before his sixteenth birthday, at which point he will receive three gifts from his father and come into his own as a witch—or else he will die. But how can Nathan find his father when his every action is tracked, when there is no one safe to trust—not even family, not even the girl he loves?

This is author, Sally Green's, first book. This debut is just the first book out of three, which makes me even more excited. I've heard nothing but great buzz about this book so I'm expecting great things from it.

"In the tradition of Patrick Ness and Markus Zusak, Half Bad is a gripping tale of alienation and the indomitable will to survive, a story that will grab hold of you and not let go until the very last page."~GoodReads

"A stunning, magical debut. An international sensation."~GR

"Many have tipped it as doing for witches what Twilight achieved for vampires, but that seems like a great disservice to author Sally Green. Half Bad is edgy, imaginative and worth the attention of any fan of fictional thrill rides. A sure fire contender for the wickedest witch this side of the west."~ Starburtsmagizine.com

Sounds pretty darn interesting to me.
Half Bad is another 2014 debut book that I am anticipating.
What's Yours???
Love to hear y'alls thoughts :)
Til then
Happy Reading Y'all!!

Teaser Tueday: RED RISING By Pierce Brown

Teaser Tuesday is a bookish weekly meme hosted by MitzB at Should Be Reading.
Anyone can play along, just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share 2 sentences (make sure they won't tell too much of the story)
• Don't forget to include the title and author for us readers who'd like to add the book to our TBR lists

I've been anticipating the debut of this book for a while now.
So now I'm currently reading it and it just so happens to be, the author, Pierce Brown's birthday today!!! :)

"I use to reach and try to wipe the sweat away, only to scratch futilely at the faceplate of my frysuit. I still want too. Even after three years, the tickle and sting of the sweat is a raw misery."

Red Rising
By: Pierce Brown

Blurb:

"Darrow is a Helldiver, one of a thousand men and women who live in the vast caves beneath the surface of Mars. Generations of Helldivers have spent their lives toiling to mine the precious elements that will allow the planet to be terraformed. Just knowing that one day people will be able to walk the surface of the planet is enough to justify their sacrifice. The Earth is dying, and Darrow and his people are the only hope humanity has left.

Until the day Darrow learns that it is all a lie. Mars is habitable - and indeed has been inhabited for generations by a class of people calling themselves the Golds. The Golds regard Darrow and his fellows as slave labour, to be exploited and worked to death without a second thought.

With the help of a mysterious group of rebels, Darrow disguises himself as a Gold and infiltrates their command school, intent on taking down his oppressors from the inside.

But the command school is a battlefield. And Darrow isn't the only student with an agenda..."

If that doesn't make you want to read the book then I don't know what will,
OH! That it has gotten nothing but AMAZING reviews already!!!
GO OUT AND GET IT Y'ALL!!!!!!

A HUGE HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO PIERCE BROWN
AND A WAY TO GO ON YOUR DEBUT!!!
ENJOY AND HAPPY READING Y'ALL!!

TODAY'S TOP TEN TUESDAY: TRADING PLACES IS A BUST!!!!

Top Ten Tuesdays is a meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish that features a new topic each week where we have to put down our top ten of it.

Today's  Top Ten Topic:

World's we'd never want to live in or Character's we wouldn't want to trade places with:

In no particular order:

Divergent
By: Veronica Roth

A world divided by factions. Which none of the factions seem all that great to live by, especially Dauntless. I'll pass.

The Hunger Games
By: Suzanne Collins

A world divided by districts, where names of children and teens are drawn to go into the annual Hunger Games to fight til the death to become the last one standing and champion of the Hunger Games.

NO FREAKIN THANK YOU!!!!!

By: Pierce Brown

Being lied to by a corrupt government, used like slaves,
Hot, stinky and exhausted all day everyday....UUUGGGGHH

(Currently Reading and totally captivated by it!!! READ IT)

By: Susan Ee

Angel apocalypse!!! Our world destroyed and run by angels. Not the typical angels we grown to know either. These are warrior angels sent here to F things up. The streets are filled with gangs and scavengers that will scalp you just for a candy bar. Nope! Don't want to live in this world, PASS!!! (I don't care how gorgeous some of the angels are!!!)

By: Chuck Palahniuk

Living in hell where there's mountains of toenail clippings and lakes of saliva!!??!!

I MOST DEFINITELY WILL PASS!!!!!!!!!!
Keep me far away from hell please! LOL!!

By: China Miéville

It's like London on the flip side. Like an Alice and Wonderland type of London, with carnivorous Giraffe's that roam the streets, trash bins that attack and how about garbage as your pet instead of a dog or cat?! NO THANKS! Deeba, the secondary character/sidekick to Zanna, the main character, is one tough cookie! I'd definitely never want to trade places with her. She's got a lot on her plate

By: Melina Marchetta

Quintana is definitely a character that I would NEVER want to trade places with!! She has it rough from DAY 1 and she's a princess. You'd think she'd be pampered and protected, not this girl. She's beaten, taken advantage of, used just for sex, and insulted everyday by the people of her land.  I've never felt so sorry for a character as much as I did poor Quintana.

By: Chuck Palahniuk

I wouldn't trade places with the narrator or Tyler Durden or whoever he is. All day he risks his life fighting people and doing these outrageous tasks that involve, blowing things up, breaking and entering, and building an army of mindless f**ks!

By: J.R.R. Tolkien

I absolutely have no desire at all to trade places with Frodo Baggins! NO WAY! This poor hobbit has the unruly task of taking The Ring to the fires of Mordor and destroying it. In order to do so he must embark on a grueling journey where he encounters a SHIT TON of horrifying obstacles. Including armies of godawful Orcs, ghastly ghosts of the undead, and a hideous, dreadful creature named Gollum.

By: Garth Nix

Last but least, there's Sabriel. I would never want to trade places with this young gal who has the job of a Necromancer. She must lay the dead to rest. EEEEKKKK!
Encountering evil evil creatures along the way.

Sorry Sabriel. You can keep your job!

Those were some tough decisions to make! I've read a lot of books where I would
never want to live not even visit!!! I'd love to hear your thoughts :)

HAPPY READING Y'ALL!!!

By: M.P. Kozlowsky

After Juniper notices how strange her parents have been acting, her friend Giles and her follow them into the woods one night to discover that strange has NOTHING compared to what they find next.

I want to know what Juniper Berry and Giles find out!!!! Don't You???

Doll Bones, Liesl & Po, and Juniper Berry have all 3 been on my TBR list for quite some time now. So when I was writing out my list of books for the Library, I made sure I wrote them down!! So I went with a more Juvenile/Middle Grade group of books this week to read! I'm EXCITED!!!

Books that I bought:

By: Max Brooks
"The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years"

I've been wanting to read the book since the movie came out! Haven't seen the movie yet. I want to read the book first. I heard that it was good so we'll see. Plus this book was only .50cents at the Library and it's in fabulous condition, practically brand new! WOOOHOOO!!!!

Hope you guys liked my list of books I got, maybe even added some to you TBR list :)
hee hee hee!!
Hope y'all are having a great weekend!
Til next time
Happy Reading Y'all!!!!!!!!!!!
xoxo
