Book Beginnings on Fridays & The Friday 56 #2

Hey guys! Join me every Friday for some
bookish fun!!!
 I'll be sharing Book Beginnings
hosted by Rose City Readers; and for double the fun
The Friday 56 from Freda's Voice!

Yay! Two memes in one :)
Here we go....

Book Beginnings on Fridays:

share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Don't forget to include the title of the book and the author's name.

"We rowed out through the harbor, past bobbing boats weeping rust from their seams, past juries of silent seabirds roosting atop the barnacled remains of sunken docks, past fishermen who lowered their nets to stare frozenly as we slipped by, uncertain whether we were real or imagined; a procession of waterborne ghosts, or ghosts soon to be."

Hollow City
By: Ransom Riggs
published: January 14, 2014
Sequel to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (published: June 7, 2011) *my birthday :)

 My thoughts
Just from that first sentence, well paragraph, makes me happy. Sounding so whimsical and flowing smoothly like lyrics to a song. The authors words are so hauntingly beautiful.
I can very much picture the setting the author wants us to see, an unsettling and eerie backdrop. Still waters being broken by fishermen's nets and of the boat carrying the narrator and "waterborne ghosts or ghosts soon to be".

The Friday 56:

Grab a book, any book, and turn to page 56 or 56% on ebooks. Share a sentence (or more) that left an impression or that stood out.

" We had to find a way to amuse ourselves because we had no stories--no dreams, no future--other than the ones we created for ourselves." pg. 56

My thoughts:
when you find yourself locked away, a prisoner from life's most precious things, it's hard to be positive about anything!! You can take away t.v., books, ect... but you can never take away my mind. My memories, MY imagination, those are there to stay!!!  No one can take that away from me!!!

Hope you enjoyed today's weekly meme!
I'd love to hear y'alls answers and thoughts.
Til next time,
Happy Reading Y'all!!
xoxo

  1. First impression: Both seem to insinuate a sense of heaviness, darkness. Hope you enjoy your stories.

    1. It really is. The more I read the more it reminds me of Clive Barker and Neil Gaiman's style of writing.

    1. I know! I can't believe I've waited this long to read it. I didn't know about it until the second book, Never Fade came out in 2013.
I hear you on the "Mountain pile of books", I have one too! lol
